A Fort Wainwright soldier was killed and two others were injured Sunday by an improvised explosive device in Iraq.

The soldiers, assigned to the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, were conducting a mounted patrol in Baghdad at 4 p.m. Sunday (4 a.m. Alaska time) at the time of the attack, according to Maj. Kirk Gohlke, spokesman for the U.S. Army.

One of the injured soldiers was listed in serious condition. The other was listed as not seriously injured. Both were evacuated to medical facilities in Iraq, Gohlke said in a news release.

Families of the soldiers have been notified. It is the policy of the Department of Defense not to release the names of soldiers killed until at least 24 hours after family has been notified.

This is the 21st death of a soldier with the 172nd since the brigade deployed to Iraq in August 2005 and is the 17th death related to combat. This is the third death within the 172nd since the brigade’s deployment was extended earlier this summer and the unit moved to Baghdad.
