Missoulian: Irish can't fight off superstitions: Descendants laugh at heritage, but won't hand friend a knife

 

BUTTE - Lori Maloney will never walk in the front door of her home and then leave out the back for fear she'd be letting the devil roam throughout the house.
While the Butte native with an oh-so-Irish last name is at it, there will never be a hat on her bed, shoes on the table or a new calendar on the wall before New Year's Day.
“You won't live to see it,” she said of people foolish enough to tempt fate with pre-New Year's calendars.

Those are just a handful of the Irish superstitions by which Maloney lives her life.
